Here are some top tips tips to help support your child's reading at home:
- Try to encourage your child to read at least four times a week for 10 minutes. Just 10 minutes can make the difference! Most year 5 and 6 children will read alone but try to share and discuss their reading with them.
- Encourage your child to complete the reading activities on the back of their reading challenge each term. These activities, which focus on their comprehension skills, are just as important as their mechanical reading skills.
- Visit the library with your child and encourage them to read materials around the home such as recipes, newspapers and instructions.
- Discuss the reading challenge at home with your child. Maybe even complete the reading challenge as a whole family.
Finally, if you have any questions about reading at home with your child, your child’s class teacher will be happy to discuss this with you and share further ideas and top tips. Also, you can find help and support with reading on the school website within the year group pages including lists of recommended reads.
