P.S.H.E and R.S.E.

P.S.H.E. at Hollyfast Primary School

Vision

Our PSHE curriculum at Hollyfast is designed to enable and encourage all children to be unique, positive, mindful individuals. Personal, social and health education forms an integral part of the curriculum at Hollyfast Primary.  It helps to give pupils the knowledge, skills and understanding they need to lead confident, healthy, independent lives and to become informed, active, responsible citizens. All members of staff are committed to encouraging the children to develop  an understanding of right and wrong and to take responsibility for their own behaviour.  We use the Jigsaw scheme as a basis for our PSHE teaching and learning.

Our curriculum is designed to:

  • develop pupils’ understanding of the world and of personal, social, health and emotional concepts and relevant vocabulary
  • provide pupils with a relevant, age-appropriate and broad curriculum
  • understand issues relating to their own health, personal care, sexual development and relationships
  • enable pupils to make choices
  • provide pupils with strategies to maintain personal wellbeing, promote resilience and equip pupils with skills to keep themselves and others safe
  • promote an atmosphere celebrating equality and diversity
  • enable learners to form appropriate relationships and give them a sense of dignity and respect for each other
  • develop personal responsibility, self confidence and assertiveness.
  • empower learners so they have more control over their own life
  • enhance their self esteem

Within these lessons, our value of 'Courage' will be promoted. as children will be given the opportunity for open discussion, questions and safe places to talk. Furthermore, we will instil in children a sense of social responsibility- discussing and celebrating differences. encourage the children’s natural curiosity; questioning learners, striving towards excellence

Our Approach

At Hollyfast, we follow the Jigsaw scheme. Jigsaw offers a comprehensive programme for Primary PSHE including statutory Relationships and Health Education, in a spiral, progressive and fully planned scheme of work, giving children relevant learning experiences to help them navigate their world and to develop positive relationships with themselves and others. Jigsaw aims to help children know and value who they really are and how they relate to other people in this ever-changing world.

Designed as a whole-school approach, Jigsaw meet all statutory RSHE requirements. The scheme nurtures children to be confident and successful, increasing their capacity to learn and preparing them for the challenges of the modern world whilst providing them with opportunities to develop their emotional intelligence and life skills.

With strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health, Jigsaw properly equips schools to deliver engaging and relevant PSHE within a whole-school approach. Jigsaw lessons also include mindfulness allowing children to advance their emotional awareness, concentration and focus.

Using Jigsaw, all year groups work on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time.  There are six Puzzles (half-term units of work) each with six Pieces (lessons). Every year group studies the same Puzzle at the same time (sequentially ordered from September to July), allowing for whole-school themes to be discussed. Each year group is taught one lesson per week and all lessons are delivered in an age- and stage-appropriate way so that they meet children’s needs. The different puzzle pieces are:

Relationships and Sex Education

RSE has a key part to play in the personal, social, moral and spiritual development of young people. This important part of the Jigsaw PSHE programme is delivered through the 'Relationships' and 'Changing Me' puzzle pieces which are covered in the summer term.

There are four main aims of teaching RSE:

• To enable children to understand and respect their bodies
• To help children develop positive and healthy relationships appropriate to their age and development
• To support children to have positive self-esteem and body image
• To empower them to be safe and safeguarded.

Each year group will be taught appropriate to their age and developmental stage. Below is a summary of RSE coverage within the Jigsaw scheme for each year group:

• Foundation Stage - Growing up: how we have changed since we were babies
• Year 1 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; naming body parts
• Year 2 - Boys’ and girls’ bodies; body parts and respecting privacy (which parts of the body are private and why this is)
• Year 3 - How babies grow and how boys’ and girls’ bodies change as they grow older
• Year 4 - Internal and external reproductive body parts, body changes in girls and menstruation
• Year 5 - Puberty for boys and girls, and conception
